Arwel

The god of the moon and water. They have many varied depictions, but the most popular depiction is Arwel as a massive mermaid (half goddess, half mermaid), though there are two contrasting aspects that Arwel worship falls into. They are recognized by Opaless, their divine hammer, and Cete Celare, their divine armor. They are a patron of sailors everywhere. Not much is known about Arwel’s origin, though some scholars posit that if they are a sibling of Halo, then they too must have been a draconic god or great wyrm of some kind at some point.

Faiths and Followers of Arwel
-
Libitina. Worship of Arwel has managed to escape the orbit of antagonism pointed at Greyscale, though only barely. House Aspasia pledges themselves to Arwell Marina, and the Libitina Navy all carry many symbols and dedications to them to avoid the sea god’s wrath. There are also temples to Arwel Demona, but not many. Often depicted as a merwhale.
-
Diaspora. The importance of a water god in a desert cannot be overstated, but with no ocean as a major part of their society, much of Arwell’s aspects as a ocean god end up removed. Much of the Diaspora pray to a version of Arwel that is mostly Arwell Demona, but is still considered responsible for bringing rain and planting oases. Often depicted as a cloaked figure in dark blues, adored with star-like droplets of water.
-
Refuge. Arwel is a widely important deity inside Refuge. Arwel is prayed to for navigational aid. Refuge worships Arwel as a navigational aid, and blends her moon and water aspects better than most as sky sailors. Arwel is a black bird-like god that carries the moon and wears the night sky as armor. They bring storms with the flapping of their wings.
-
Feyborn City States. Arwel Marina is considered as the patron of Coral, the city state of the sea elves and mermaids, and holds the largest temple to them outside of Greyscale. Uniquely, Arwel is depicted extremely similar as in Libitina, though their mermaid traits are made more elven. In Spider’s Keep, there is additionally a huge temple dedicated exclusively to Arwel Demona, which is also responsible for maintaining the cloak of night over the city-state.
-
Greyscale. Arwel is one of the supreme gods of Greyscale, depicted as a massive Great Wyrm that carries the moon and creates the ocean with their breath. Most towns in Greyscale have one temple to Arwel, made to at least one aspect. All amphibious dragons trace their ability to live in the ocean to Arwel, or at least claim to.
-
The Red Isles. Arwel is one of the supreme gods of the Red Isles, and viewed as the deity that holds back the blood sea, and is constantly working to cleanse the fiends from the ocean. The depictions of Arwel mostly view as a benevolent sea monster, though there are some temples dedicated to Arwel Demona.
Divine Realm: The Celestial Sea. An infinite blue-black ocean filled with every form of life and riches, with stars of positive energy flowing throughout. It is said that the Celestial Sea makes up the night sky, and that those that look up at night can make out the smallest, most distant fraction of the Celestial Sea. All those beloved by Arwell and all good aquatic creatures find themselves in the Celestial Sea, where they can swim forever through a perfect ocean of light, treasure, and beauty.
Arwel Court
-
Arwel Demona (Night/Moon aspect). Arwel’s aspect as the god of the moon, night, and stars. Depicted as a beautiful being dressed in the night sky, carrying the moon and her hammer.
-
Arwel Marina (Ocean divinity aspect). Arwel’s aspect as the god of water, and the ocean. Depicted mostly as aquatic dragons, sea monsters or a giant mermaid.
-
Depths (Water Primordial) An ancient water primordial that rules over the concept of water in the Realm of Ideals. A member of Arwel’s divine court since it’s inception, Depths is often invited to the Celestial Sea by Arwel Marina.
